Summary

At first I was somewhat intimidated by this experience. I learned about a lot of new things such and Shelfari and Google Docs. I had some trouble with the image generator but Laura, my co-worker helped me on that thing. Having to create and remember passwords for all the sites was a little annoying but I continued in order to complete the assignments. I'm glad CML offered this opportunity and I'll probably explore several of the sites in the coming months.

MOLDI

I browsed some of the titles and have downloaded a couple books from home. I know customers will be pleased to learn they can download books to their ipods. I think this may be another option for when students may need a particular title right now and all available copies are checked out or they are unwilling to go to another branch to pick up an available copy.

Podcasts

Most of the ones I explored were for entertainment purposes. However, I know they are useful in professional environments. Conferences use them to share to a wider audience what was presented at a meeting. It's another collabrative tool I see useful but some sites could be overused and time wasters.

Web 2.0 Tool Box

I didn't realize all these things were here. I'll definitely use it at home. I'll have to explore more when I have time.

YouTube

I explored a couple sites. My daughter has used YouTube to watch some interesting videos. I watched a person make cheddar cheese biscuits from Kraft.

Web 2.0 tools

Well, I guess you can find just about everything in a virtual world. I explored Craiglist, Googlemaps, Delicious, and a couple job sites. It's interesting but it still takes time to look and various sites.

GoogleDocs

At first this was somewhat confusing to me. I can see how I could use this personally and could see its advantages in the workplace. Since at CML we have many working groups and collaborations among staff regarding SRC, policies, procedures, and best practices among other things, I see this type of sharing of documents really is more efficient and practical.

Wiki

The use of wikis seems useful to individuals and libraries. I can see the connectiveness it fosters. With the use of the internet evolving rapidly we are breaking it down into manageable pieces that make sense to us and the work we do.

Wikis seem to have merit. I like the idea of the community involvement and the easy way to edit and improve the content. Making the library and its respective branches responsive to the needs of the individual communities is a definite advantage.
After reading several posts about Library 2.o I'm a little more informed about what it is about. The idea of not entirely new ideas but the compilation of those ideas in different forms is somewhat new. I agree with some posts that libraries tend to market to the younger customers but the 40+ generation and baby boomers are still very much a vibrant part of our society and shouldn't be forgotten. While the increasing minority population and poor regions of our country are still underserved in all matters, not just library interests, these demographic populations should get attention also.

I signed up for the delicious account but I really don't see the purpose of it. I'm not a person who needs to talk on the cell phone continually and tell others about the minutia of my day. I think the running social commentary of ordinary days is boring. If you have important news or ideas, sure go ahead and share them but to comment on the cup of coffee you're drinking is a waste of time. When this country is behind in the math and sciences and we are struggling to maintain an intelligent work force I think minds and the internet could be put to better use than using and microblog such as delicious.com. Just my opinion.

I went back to Library Thing and read the reviews of one of the books I recently read, Off Season by Siddons. I was interested in reading another of her books and a review mentioned one of her previous books which I think I'll try.
The library thing was probably the easiest of the 23 things I've tried so far. Most of the things take me longer to do than is planned. Since I'm just part-time I am behind but I hope to catch up in the remaining weeks.

Shelfari

This week I just started using Shelfari. Nice way to keep track of what I've read and share with other readers.

Technology

I can see the potential for using Flickr to organize photos. Once I learn more about it I would like to use it to create a personal cookbook with pictures of healthy recipes my familly enjoys.

# 6 Kalidescopes

I had fun with the kalidescopes but I couldn't figure out how to send them to my blog with the time I had.

# 2 Lifelong Learners

The easiest thing I have found in completing a goal is accepting responsibility for my own learning. The hardest thing I have trouble with in completing a goal is viewing problems as challenges and getting past them. Perhaps putting more things in my toolbox to overcome these challenges will help.
